Foundation
Class of 2021
Regina Nogues
Although I haven't been at ECU for an entire year, I can already say I've learned a lot about myself as an artist. Got to explore so many different techniques and mediums. I can't wait to keep improving my practice and learn more about myself.
Andrea Bollen
Working as an occupational therapist during the pandemic I became my art and my art became me
I learned to look at the negative spaces the little shapes in between
what new worlds emerged
I am finding balance between transparency and cultivating a secret garden
K. Day
It's a strange feeling to have spent a year attending a school you've never physically seen. To me, ECU is an abstract concept, a collection of people, rather than a location. Somehow in all this mess I've managed to learn something. It's a small victory, but one I needed.
Jiah Lee
Online learning is different.
Mufei Li
"Je voue mes nuits àl'assasymphonie, au requiem." I said.
"que nos rires, ont bemé la mort et le temps." ECU replied.
I spoke the language that I do not understand. I sang. I cried. There is no new show under the sun. Let us go to the moon.
Castle Liu
I've learned that we have to write essays in art school, a lot of them.
Yoyo Lee
Over the past eight months, I now clearly understand that art is not only the essence of culture, but also a reflection of myself.
Ella White
Being at ECU vastly changed the themes of the art I make. I now think more politically, and the content of my drawings has matured within the short time I've been here. I believe that I have changed as a person and will continue to do so.
Amber Kamachi
Application for a normal school year: Pending (may experience delays due to high volume of applicants)
Freyr Cohen
Each of my peers are so incredibly unique and wonderful, I look forward to seeing myself and others grow as artists and create works that we truly want to create.
Mason Elliott
"I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring." - David Bowie
Meihe Yan
This year I have many thanks and regrets. I'm thankful to be able to stay with my family for an extra year, I regret not knowing what our school looks like.
Jess Tustin
I’ve reached new levels of procrastination that I was not prepared for.
Natalie Janine
Learned a lot about things that had nothing to do with school, and retained nothing about anything that did.
Jenny Wu
In my Foundation year, I've experienced a lot of new things that challenged me to step out of my comfort zone. Constant exploration helped me find the right direction. Even though the pandemic has been difficult, it’s taught me to be more positive about life.
Jaida Hamilton
This year has taught me that being an artist is organic, fluid and ever-changing. I'm not meant to be stagnant with my art, instead I must evolve with it and trust the process of creation.
Kamila Bashir
My daily affirmations for the past year sounded like:
Be free
Or bound
Create
Or take a break
Be art
Or make art
Float
Or immerse
Sort it
Or go with the flow
Do whatever brings you peace of mind, and pleasure.
Linh Phan
My Foundation year helped me reconnect with my inner artist. I learned to create with values, honesty and confidence and that the stories I tell matter. You know how they always talk about following your passion? Now I can say that it feels damn good! Tell more stories
Connor Simpson
I think that I've become more comfortable working without a specific goal in mind, being more open to experimentation and discovering things along the way.
Maria Mazilenko
I didn't know what to expect when coming here at such a time, coupled with the self-doubt I had upon entry, but I'm already finishing the first year with so many wonderful friends, and a new-found strength and confidence. To my Discord squad: I love you guys so much.
