PROJECT 2: Hand Building

For this project students watched two films, Maria Martinez: Native American Pottery of San IIdefonso and African Pottery Forming and Firing. The films provide an interesting perspective on two cultural approaches to making ceramics outside the structure of an institution. They show how the creation of ceramics starts with the land and transforms into a need for daily living and a form of expression. The films were the starting point for this project, students were asked to make a work that reflected on the films.
