Assignment: Working With Found Objects – Surrealist Transformations

Surrealism was an artistic movement that responded to the chaos of the First World War and the emergence of psychotherapy as a medical model that explored the recesses of the human psyche.

In this project students were directed to make a work starting with an existing object, that employed the Surrealist approach of radical juxta-positioning of unrelated images or things. They were encouraged to explore themes such as dreams, sex, childhood, games, death, mythology and chance that appear in many Surrealist works.
