Four Footed Fantastical Beasts
Four Footed Fantastical Beasts
This multi-phase drawing and sculpture project is an adaptation of Assistant Professor Mark Igloliorte’s Foundation Project.
Student groups constructed mixed media sculptures referencing the humanoid creatures in Edward Topsell’s: ‘The History of Four-footed Beasts and Serpents Woodcuts’, 1565.
The beasts are constructed of a plywood/chicken wire armature topped with lightweight materials and plaster bandage. Each beast sculpture incorporates five to six plaster casts from student’s arms and hands. Surface textures such as scales and fur were sculpted out of plaster, found objects and recycled packaging. Students annotated their beasts in a pseudoscientific manner.
Many thanks to Mark for sharing this project!
